A Vacation of Sorts

Monday, Jacob took off work, and we had my parents come to watch the boys.

We took off around 11:30 after getting things in order at home and headed to Riverton, Utah...with this dude.
William had a minor surgery at the Primary Children's Outreach Hospital in Riverton.  To be sensitive to a some day teenage boy, we are just going to say it was a minor surgery of a private nature. (If you really want to know, I'm more than happy to tell you privately)
Before we left Jacob gave him a wonderful father's blessing and said the surgery would go well and he'd be back to his rambunctious self in no time.  On the way, we could tell he had no clue what was happening.  Why everyone was fussing about him, and why he was alone with mom and dad.  But in no time he truly started enjoying himself, and really Jacob and I loved getting to shower just William with attention.  We first checked out their fun decorations while getting checked in and then it was off to playing with toys, and taking pictures, while waiting to go back.
A nurse came and gave him a quick check up to make sure he was healthy enough to be put under anesthesia.  We gave him a good rub down and then put on his cute hospital shrubs.
*In case you were wondering, he didn't have anything to eat for breakfast except apple juice and jello.  And then nothing past 10; we checked in at 12.  They said they liked to schedule the appointments where he thinks it could take longer than scheduled for the end, so William was Dr. Snow's last appointment.
After he was all ready, they took us to the special waiting room before going back.  It was loaded with toys, cars, and wagons.  They said he was running about 15 minutes late, so we'd just have to wait about 45 minutes.
So we went for many trips around the halls to try and pass time.

Seriously it was adorable!
Sometimes we grab a wagon to take on our trips or a ball, whatever to keep us occupied.
Well what we thought would be 45 minutes really turned into 2 1/2 hours.  Jacob was having an especially hard time staying awake and alert while just waiting.
William was just adorable and loved having our full attention.  (After coming home, Jacob mentioned that William was different even before he went in for his surgery.  That's when I reminded him, he didn't have to fight for our attention, he was the only child for once and it suited him well.)

Finally it was our turn.  We heard the little boy before us screaming down the hall, so we decided to put William in the car and have them take him to the operating room that way.  We chose a flavor that he would smell as the anesthetic started to work (strawberry), then drove him to the line where the parents had to stop.  The anesthesiologist was really great and kept him some what distracted while they wheeled him away...
He turned back a couple of times, but never cried that we know of.  Jacob and I kept saying the whole day how brave he was!

Jacob and I quickly ran to grab some lunch from the cafeteria since we didn't want to eat anything in front of William and he didn't go back until about 2:45.  Everything went well and sooner than we expected we were told we could see him.  It took him a couple of minutes to wake up, but when he did he looked at me and motioned for me to pick him up.  We were about to wheel him to more private room, but he couldn't wait, he stood up and made a leap for me. I got to carry him back to the room instead.  It was nice to know that after everything, he still needed his momma.

We were worried about how he'd react when coming out of the anesthesia, but once again he did great.  He was super drowsy and sad looking, but Jacob and I kept fighting over who got to snuggle him.  We just couldn't get enough of our strong brave boy.

They told us he would be drowsy for the rest of the day, maybe two; Jacob and I were actually looking forward to getting some good snuggling in.  But like true William form, 3 hours later he was practically back to his old self, with a pretty funny walk.  And now 48 hours later you wouldn't have ever known.  Occasionally, mostly just when he wakes up, he will gesture to the incision sites and moan, but after a little Motrin he's good as new.  He had three incisions, but all of them are healing well. I'll be honest though, I have a hard time looking at them.
Even though it was not anything any of us would like to go through again, it was nice to just spend time with mom, dad, and William.
We sure love this kid!
